The Fitzwilliam Museum,
University of Cambridge, U.K.

I work at the Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge (UK) where as the Information & Communications Technology (ICT) Manager I am responsible for all technology and phone infrastructure, applications, services and projects.

I'm a professional 'IT generalist' - with a background in electronics (10 years) and over 15 years IT employment in a variety of organisational settings. For many years I have held managerial IT roles in small to medium sized organisations where I choose to remain 'hands on' in the design, development and maintenance of:

  • IT infrastructure (e.g data and phone networks, servers, directory, storage and backup systems - to name a few)
  • Applications and in-house systems (e.g. PHP/MySQL intranet/Internet development), and
  • anything else ICT which comes up :)

I have strong interest in Internet services. The Fitzwilliam Museum, like all cultural organisations, is very interesting in this regard. Cultural organisations are rich repositories of knowledge - in both the staff and artifacts. In a digital sense, like libraries, cultural organisations are sources of information and media. The challenge continues as to how best use, re-use, and present these sources of information for a variety of audiences (in the Fitz's case ranging from the general public to academic specialists)

The 'bottom line' these days is ICT is all about service. Sure, technology 'turns my crank', but the thing which really gives me job satisfaction is good technology systems and services delivered for our staff and clients.
