New shit has come to light

⊰ 2022-08-29 by ShaunO ⊱

So having left behind the age of the toorak tractor1, learjets over kulgera2, and "I'm just helping my lady friend conceive man!"3, your newly educated urban greenie has moved on to a very tight CO2 schedule. They're now limiting themselves to:

  • two flights a year to Sydney to attend wildlife conservation conferences,

  • a tight electricity budget of 27KW per day by reducing their climate control to 21C and only putting through 3 dishwasher loads a day,

  • a new retirement plan of caravan travel where they are only expecting to feed their 5L V8 'tug' about 9 mpg (~31l/100km), whilst towing their 3 and half tonne 30 foot caravan around 350km a day, thereby limiting their fuel consumption to circa 750 litres per week

Dead Cat Bounce?

⊰ 2022-08-24 by ShaunO ⊱

So that (July-August) was a 'dead cat bounce'?

Probably not, a bit of exuberance whilst the markets work out what direction we're actually going in..

Leopard changing its spots?

⊰ 2022-08-23 by ShaunO ⊱

I like Gordon Brown, I think he's probably smart, genuine, and honest.

But I can't help thinking when I see him 'don his socialist suit' like he is in this article that there's a complete omission of admission about the role 'New Labour' played helping along the neocon agenda in the UK.

He's right, of course, something (and probably something radical) has to be done about costs otherwise the UK will continue on its unstable trajectory (and it might get ugly as Nesrine Malik points out), politically and socially, to who knows where.

But I'm not at all sure that history will be kind to the 'Blair/Brown' years and their contribution to unleashing the uber-capitalism forces which are probably the root cause of what is now 'in play'.

We must tax profits now, freeze energy price rises - and if necessary bring suppliers into the public sector | Gordon Brown

Is racial/religious 'tagging' really necessary?

⊰ 2022-08-23 by ShaunO ⊱

WTF?

The reason that in this article two individuals are referred to as:

  • "Persian-Australian property developer", and

  • "89-year-old Russian-Jewish real estate developer"

is done why precisely? What is the ABC thinking? Do they think it's reasonable, in this day and age, to still use racial and religious 'tagging'?

Isn't it more appropriate to simply use their names? Which are, respectively:

  • Mr Soheil Abedian (Sunland Group)

  • Mr Harry Triguboff (Meriton)

Attrition

⊰ 2022-08-22 by ShaunO ⊱

Oh yeah, this from a period when I was 'under attack' in my own workplace during 2010-2015..

My luck was that the 'adversaries' seriously over-rated their own intelligence, and in the end I simply 'out flanked' them on strategic and tactical responses, and stayed the course, in a 'war of attrition'.. 😐

I posted it back in 2015 with the by-line:

"at least working for myself the only incompetence, arrogance, and stupidity I'll have to bear is my own"

National Trust of S.A.

⊰ 2022-08-21 by ShaunO ⊱

We do have limited built structure conservation in Australia (compared to say, Europe), so if you can, you really should support the National Trust of S.A (or the affiliate in your state).

e.g. work being carried out at Moonta Heritage area presently (youtube video)

Also in support of that the National Trust working on trails, e.g. "The Silver to Sea" trail, a Broken Hill to Port Pirie 'trail'.

Spent power

⊰ 2022-08-21 by ShaunO ⊱

It'd probably be a good idea if UK politicians and departments dialled down the rhetoric, and 'trimmed their cloth' the match the reality of where the country finds itself.

Bordering on being a financial basket case, a spent military power without its US "relationship", and getting close to having a non functioning government internally, the UK is hardly any sort power to be reckoned with anymore..

reality bites, me thinks..

Correlations pivot around Oil

⊰ 2022-08-20 by ShaunO ⊱

John has another novel outlook in this article where he ruminates that everything appears, with pretty strong correlations, to revolve around oil price.

I do like John's articles in general, and this one in particular as an example of 'his art of writing'. Data and correlation interest me because they help shine a light on how this crazy world, based on finance, works societally at a 'macro level'. John has a particular gift at picking 'needles out of haystacks' and then trying to see what they mean, if anything. He's reasonable, objective and not prone to ideology or dogma. In short, he's a pretty good positive example of an 'old school' journalist.

What a dip stick

⊰ 2022-08-16 by ShaunO ⊱

Yeah, that was bound to happen, somebody was going to start calling for heads to roll..

He's got quite the legacy now. Scotty from marketing was never the sharpest knife in the drawer, and he damaged the coalition brand so badly they couldn't even win an election after splashing 430 billion dollars out into the economy during covid. Now he's escalated the LNP taint from plain 'losers' to seriously repugnant. Well done dip stick, I'm sure history will not be kind to you..

Why the markets are bouncing

⊰ 2022-08-16 by ShaunO ⊱

"of the investing profession (a hundred years ago everyone in stocks was a degenerate gambler with a margin loan, now just half of us are) and the advent of massive retirement systems (a hundred and fifty years ago you died plowing a cornfield or got shot in the street over an insult – that was your retirement plan)."

If this sort of sardonic take on the economic world tickles your chops then you'll probably enjoy this article by Josh Brown :-)

US Dollar Everywhere

⊰ 2022-08-14 by ShaunO ⊱

Yep, what's nuts is it's a zero sum game. Ultimately as Adam Tooze points out, it's always "I win, you lose"..

And the fact that most people have their head in the sand about how globalised everything is (down to the interest rate on your account down at the 'corner bank') isn't too surprising. People adapt slowly, maybe taking a couple of generations to internalise fundamental change (e.g. the industrial revolution). The globalisation change didn't really get going till the 80's and has obviously accelerated over the past couple of decades.

The young'uns are obviously growing up with this as their reality, the rest of us are on 'catch up'..

Your Monkeys, Your Circus

⊰ 2022-07-15 by ShaunO ⊱

Oh yeah.. which delusion is your greatest illusion, kind of thing.. πŸ™‚

Being really honest with yourself is much more of a challenge than most people imagine - it takes practice, time, and courage to 'de-script' from a lifetime of familial, societal, educational, and corporate 'training'..

Some people never manage it, and that's ok because everbody's path is different..

Those that do, get a glimpse at one of the "truest forms of freedom".

I'm sure this stuff exists in many philosophical, spiritual, and emotional literature spheres, but I can't give you any quotes/references unfortunately because I tend to 'osmose' this kind of thing rather than remember exactly where it comes from..

Or maybe, to be self de-referential, it's all just one of my delusions! πŸ˜ƒ

UK real wage decline worst than post-GFC

⊰ 2022-07-11 by ShaunO ⊱

The following graph shows what I anecdotally experienced post-GFC (2008) in the UK. My best guess was a fall in real wages of between 10-15% over 2008-2013.

That fall is significantly faster now by the looks, with workers once again paying for the hubris of an incompetent Tory government, and from 'shooting themselves in the foot' with brexit..

Are they meeting treaty conditions?

⊰ 2022-07-06 by ShaunO ⊱

The problem with treaty/membership/diplomacy by 'hope' is that it comes back to bite you..

Arguably Turkey's membership of NATO was always 'a bit of an eyebrow raiser'.. Equally, Hungary's EU membership always represented more hope, than reality IMO.

These countries are effectively (currently) 'soft dictatorships', with a tendency leaning towards full autocracy.

As the geo-political landscape is likely to shift quite dramatically over the next 5 years, serious consideration will have to be given to whether to expel them if they do not (or no longer can, or wish to) meet their original treaty obligations..

That's a bit grim..

⊰ 2022-06-22 by ShaunO ⊱

That's looking pretty grim. My real returns to date for financial year 2022 (FY in Aust. for European folks is 1Jul->30Jun..).

If we're lucky we'll finish at circa 'even'.. having swung from gains of over 4% at a couple of points, to 2ish % down today..

But in context my last years earnings were circa 18% (as were everybody else's) so it's all swings and round-a-bouts..
